About the Union Grove Ruritan Club Club

Union Grove Ruritan History

In 1960, D.P. Thurmond, Lt. Governor of the Western NC Ruritan District, and member of Ronda Ruritan Club, working with our Principal John Rooks, decided to try to form a Ruritan Club in Union Grove. After 3 meetings the club was organized and chartered and on April 12, 1960 with the help of District Officers Wendell Simmons, Governor DP Thurmond, National Director-Bob Ammick and L.Z. Walsh. One of the requirements was the membership to be 1/3 Farmers, 1/3 Business Men, 1/3 Professional Men. The club was chartered with 21 members and the first President was John Rooks.

In 1962 as Ruritan spread to others communities; it became necessary to form another District, which would be called the Piedmont District. The District consisted of 25 clubs, including Union Grove. The District now consists of approximately 63 clubs.

Union Grove was the first club organized in Iredell County, which now has 7 clubs. We helped organize two of these clubs, Cool Springs and New Hope-Iredell. In Davie County we have helped organize Sheffield-Calahan Club. The most recent club we have sponsored is Windsor?s Crossroads in Yadkin County. Today our club is actively involved in our community to make a better place in which we live, through Fellowship, Community Service and Goodwill.
